Asking Justin Ellis about the Soque River is like asking a grandparent about their grandchildren . . . grab a chair and get prepared to listen for a while.
“The Soque River is really the Heart of Habersham County,” explained Justin. “. . . so much of our local economy and quality of life here is linked in one way or another to this unique natural resource which is contained entirely within the borders of our county.”
As executive director of the Soque River Watershed Association (SRWA), Justin has his hands in a dozen or more projects related to everything from water quality issues, sustainability practices training, rainwater harvesting & conservation, stormwater treatment, stream restoration, and organic farming.
This spring and summer the SRWA helped sponsor an organic community garden near the Old Clarkesville Mill with around 26 plots and 40 participants. Other recent projects include a model rain garden installation at North Georgia Technical College, a sustainability tour of farms in Habersham and neighboring counties, and a rain barrel installation for residents of Tallulah Falls. (You can even get instructions on how to make and install your own rain barrels here!)
You have to admit that Justin’s passion for the Soque is contagious. He can make a “true believer” out of you in no time as he describes the truly unique character of the river and the importance of taking care of it. “Habersham County completely controls the fate of the Soque,” said Justin, “which is both a burden and responsibility, and a real opportunity to do some amazing things with this river.”
The SRWA encourages participation in its mission either though donations or membership in the organization. Many of the projects SRWA is involved in extend into perimeter communities and surrounding counties – a look at the association’s calendar includes a bevy of upcoming events to suit varied interests in the outdoors.
The Soque River Watershed Association (SRWA) is a nonprofit, membership organization made up of individuals and institutions interested in the preservation and protection of the Soque River Watershed.
