October brings out the colors in the northeast Georgia mountains, and with them the many visitors who like to enjoy the local festivals and outdoor events taking place in the fall. For those who prefer a little more exercise and a chance to win a hand creation from Mark of the Potter, plan to participate in the fifth annual Soque River Ramble 6K Run & Walk held on the banks of the Soque River in Batesville on October 22.
The event is quickly becoming know as “one of the most scenic runs & walks in Georgia” as its route winds along the gravel and paved roads through the Soque and Goshen Valleys in northern Habersham County. Marlan Wilbanks has made his property on Old Chimney Mountain Road available again this year to stage the event by the Left Fork Soque where a riverbank restoration project was completed a few years ago.
Registration starts at 7:30 AM with a one mile fun run at 8:30, with the 6K following at 9:00AM. Bring the whole family to enjoy a crisp cool morning in the mountains. Dogs on a leash are also welcome to join in the fun!
Refreshments are provided by Springer Mountain Farms (bottled spring water), Hawg Wild BBQ (hot muffins & coffee), and Ingles Markets (bananas & apples). The Possum Valley Bluegrass trio will perform traditional bluegrass tunes for the crowd before and during the event.
After the Ramble plan to attend the Batesville Days Celebration held from 10AM – 4PM at the historic Batesville crossroads, near the intersection of State Hwy. 197 & Hwy. 255 next to the Batesville General Store and Restaurant.
Visit the Soque River Ramble web site now to pre-register for this year’s event to insure that you get a great looking Soque River Ramble T-shirt the same day. You can also get more information on the race route and directions to the Ramble site at www.soqueriverramble.com.
Proceeds from the Ramble go to the Batesville Community Association and the Soque River Watershed Association. For more information, call Dale Holmes at 706-499-0367 or email Dale at dale@soqueriverramble.com.
